How Much Sleep Do You Need?

Many people may think they cannot function on less than ten hours a night, whilst others are well aware that too much sleep can be as bad for you as too little. The recommended estimate varies, but most seem to, at least somewhere, share the view that somewhere between 6 and 8 hours should give you all the rest you should need without overdoing it.

Often, those people who are getting between 6 and 8 hours and don’t feel as refreshed as they should are feeling that way simply because of the lack of quality of sleep rather than a lack of actual sleep. Four or five hours of unbroken sleep will be often much more beneficial than 7 or 8 hours of broken, troubled sleep.

At different ages you will need more or less sleep. Newborns could need as much as 18 hours to ensure their bodies grow and develop properly, whilst even schoolchildren can benefit from up to 9 hours. However, some people can perform perfectly well on four or five, however their bodies might not be getting the recovery time they need and should probably still look somewhere towards the 6 hour mark.

On the other hand, studies have shown people having too much sleep may die younger and also have a greater propensity for developing depression. So it is all about balance, and getting good quality sleep that will allow you to feel refreshed in the time recommended.

The right mattress will go a long way to helping the quality of sleep you get. Whether you have a single mattress or a king size one, finding the right mattress can make a huge difference. And whilst a nice single mattress will help, you can do a few extra things yourself, such as relaxation techniques before bed and ensuring you have the peace and quiet you need to fully relax every single night.
