There are many benefits of speed reading. The main advantage is that it saves time. This is because, nowadays we don’t have time to read a lot and sometimes the absolute reading which we have to do everyday takes lot of time. Here lies the advantage of speed reading which facilitates faster reading in the short amount of spare time available to us. Speed reading reduces the amount of time that you have to spend when you have to read for your professional life. There are many effective methods of quickly and efficiently increasing your reading speed when you are reading articles. Some of these methods will produce instant results and all of them will be more and more effective as you continue to practice them. The most important part of the speed reading equation is not how many tips and tricks you know – it is how often you use them and incorporate them into your everyday reading habits.

There are various methods to increase speed reading:

Hand motions or focus point guiding: The first method to speed reading is to guide your eyes. This is one of the easiest and the fastest ways to increase the reading speed. We can perform it by focusing our eyes on the text, and then we have to gradually increase our reading speed. Then we can just move our finger along the page a little bit faster than we would normally read. By doing this, we will be able to keep up with our new reading speed.

Structure: This method helps in increasing our reading speed by understanding the structure of how certain kinds of texts are created and to take advantage of it. This method is actually more of a trick – and it will generally work the best on books, magazines, newspapers, and formal texts.

Multiple words: This is a very advanced method to increase our reading speed. Here we need to read more than one words at the same time.

Scanning and review: The first thing you will have to do is to scan the text. However, speed reading in its true form is just reading at a very high speed and not scanning. Yet scanning does have its uses in speed reading. Finally, once you are done reading the text, you take another one or two seconds to review and highlight the keywords again in your mind. If these words and concepts were not in your long term memory before, they will be now!

Word Skipping: This method increases our reading speed. If you are able to master this method, you will be able to cut down a lot on the reading time. It is definitely a tough method to grasp, but once you manage to do that, you will see that it is very effective.

These are some of the techniques you can use if you are aiming to increase your reading speed. Make sure that you practice these methods quite frequently, because, with practice, you will have perfection!
