Poem must be the most romantic and melodramatic form of literature. Poem is a type of art of literature in which language is employed for its evocative and aesthetic qualities with its obvious meaning. Poem can be written autonomously, as distinct poems, or may occur in combination with other forms of arts, as in hymns, poetic drama, prose poetry or lyrics. These poems are published in individual collections, dedicated magazines, and wider anthologies. Some of the longest published poetry magazines are Poems and Oxford poetry.
Poetry, and the analysis and discussion of it, has an extensive history as most of the known ancient civilizations has some depiction of literature in the form of poetry. In ancient world, the definition of poetry, like Aristotle's Poetics, mainly focused on the utilization of speech in drama, comedy, rhetoric, and song. Later such attempts focused on the features like verse form, repetition and rhyme, and aesthetics was emphasized which differentiate poem from other objectively informative, prosaic forms of literature, like essays, articles, manifestos, novels and biographies. From the mid of the last century, the definition of poem has changed rapidly and a poem can be loosely defined as an elementary creative literature.
Typical structures and conventions are frequently used in poems to suggest unconventional meanings of particular words, and to evoke sensual or emotional responses in readers. Devices such as alliteration, assonance, rhythm and onomatopoeia, are generally used to accomplish incantatory or musical effects. The use of irony, symbolism, ambiguity, and other stylistic rudiments of poetic diction frequently creates multiple interpretations of a poem.
Most of the poems are specific to a particular genre or a culture, and it responds to the typical characteristics of the language of the poem. Most of modern American and British poetry is to some extent an analysis of poetic tradition. Poetry is thus testing and playing with, among many other things, the rule of euphony itself. Sometimes poems intentionally do not rhyme at all. Modern poets frequently borrow techniques, styles, views and forms of other poets from different languages and cultures.
In modern world, the purpose of poetry has widened enormously due to presence of the internet. Now poetry is not just guided by academic necessities or personal hobby, but poetry has become an occupation where writers make money from the poems they have written. Writing pays money to loads of writers who fabricate funny stories, poems and weird stories. Short poems are getting more popular as the content of romantic websites or as the messages. Essays have major significance in news sector also where reporters are required to write essays on various news related topics in newspapers and websites. Poetry of different genre is thus increasing popularity as it is offering new generations of writers a convenient source of income and the readers to read new kinds of creative writing.
Thus poetry over different topics and for different reasons is becoming increasingly popular with time and the significance of poem in modern literature is thereby increasing along with.
