It seems a very attractive idea when you need space to store those household knickknacks or garage tools – building your own storage units. You can choose the exact shape and size of the shelving, the material, the look and feel, and at the same time get that manly sense of achievement that only comes with undertaking huge DIY projects that drag on for weeks. You also get to save a few quid in the process.

Although, none of that is strictly true. Unless you are an exceptionally skilled carpenter or metal worker, then the results never usually quite live up to the blueprints in our heads. We get recognition from our partners, a pat on the head and a well done perhaps, but one that is usually on the same level as those reserved for a child who brings home a drawing of a car from school that actually looks like a cat with wheels.

The there is the strength issue – without the industrial testing that purchased shelving units go through, there is no real way of knowing just how many of those tools the shelving will take before the cracks start to show.

The cost of materials in such small quantities can often end up more than you might have paid for a good quality, tested unit, which will no doubt take a fraction of the time to assemble.

If your urge for self-construction has come from a rebellion against the flat pack Swedish norm that seem to be ubiquitous now, there are other options. Many online retailers sell huge ranges of storage units for any purpose at cheap, affordable prices. From gigantic metal racks to sturdy, compact wooden units, so you’re more likely to find exactly what you want online that trying to turn that idea in your mind into reality.
